Quick Hit: Columbus
Columbus is an homage to a lot of Kogonada's favorite movies and filmmakers. The first time direct draws heavy inspiration from those who came before him, but it's more than just a tribute. The film takes the techniques and building blocks laid out by the likes of Linklater, Jarmusch, Coppola, and Woodie Allen, and creates something entirely new. Nothing is co-opted or stolen. It's just built upon. The result is an incredibly beautiful and affecting film, and one of my my favorites of the year.
