Quick Hit: Beach Rats
Eliza Hittman is criminally underrated. Breaking onto the scene with my favorite film of 2013, It Felt Like Love, Hittman has displayed an impeccable ability to capture humanity at its most emotionally vulnerable. She is able to reduce the melodrama of teen-life down to its core. Laying bare the fear and instability of the period in our lives that made us who we are, Hittman expertly guides the audience through her character's self-exploration thereby reminding us what it's like to not know who you are anymore.
As Frankie says, "I've been really fucked up lately."
